HSBC UK's Andy Rankin explains how the partnership enables cardholders to delegate purchasing tasks to digital agents through secure card networks
A notable shift is taking shape in digital retail, driven by a partnership between HSBC UK and Visa. Together, the two organizations are developing AI-powered shopping experiences that allow cardholders to use their cards in the emerging era of agentic commerce.
To validate the concept, a trial saw an HSBC UK card successfully initiate a live, end-to-end agentic transaction on a merchant website, marking one of the first such achievements in the industry.
This trial signals a change in how consumers shop online. Instead of spending time browsing multiple websites to compare products, book travel, or purchase household essentials, cardholders will soon be able to delegate these tasks entirely to AI platforms.
The technology is designed to streamline the purchasing funnel, reducing transaction friction and cart abandonment for merchants while giving customers control through built-in permissions.
Andy Rankin, Chief Payments Officer at HSBC UK
Andy Rankin, Chief Payments Officer at HSBC UK, comments: "The way people pay is always evolving, and AI has the potential to make everyday shopping simpler, faster, and more convenient for our customers. At HSBC UK, we're shaping the future of payments by combining innovation, trusted technology, and industry collaboration.
"AI-powered commerce is poised to become the next major shift in how people shop, and we're working with our partners to build the experiences that will make it a reality, while ensuring customers stay firmly in control of their money.
"As new technologies emerge, customers need confidence that their payments are protected, and we're partnering with Visa to lead the industry in building trusted experiences that unlock the benefits of AI for consumers."
Security infrastructure safeguards agentic e-commerce transactions
Integrating AI into payments is designed to save consumers time on routine administrative tasks.
However, the rise of agentic commerce presents critical security considerations for financial institutions, particularly in scenarios where AI agents make purchasing decisions and execute payments on behalf of humans.

To address this, the partnership places strong emphasis on the underlying security infrastructure. Transactions will rely on robust authentication measures to ensure AI agents operate only within strict, pre-approved boundaries, including customer biometrics.
Speaking to Finance Chief, Andy adds: "Just as online shopping and mobile payments transformed how we buy, AI-powered commerce has the potential to become the next major evolution.
"As the technology matures, it could unlock productivity across the economy by making purchasing faster and simpler for consumers, while creating new opportunities for businesses to engage with customers.
"We expect AI to become a natural part of many everyday shopping journeys, but widespread adoption will depend on building trusted experiences where customers retain control over every payment decision."
Scaling card networks without requiring merchant payment overhauls
A key advantage of this collaboration is its inherent scalability. By embedding these capabilities into existing card networks, HSBC UK and Visa can scale the technology seamlessly.
This approach does not require merchants to overhaul their payment systems. Instead, it builds on security protocols already trusted by millions of businesses worldwide, ensuring a smoother rollout across the retail ecosystem.

"By connecting issuer partners like HSBC UK with merchants and AI systems through our network, we are enabling this next phase of commerce using the infrastructure and protections already in place."
