Groko Experiencing Unusual Glitch as Users Report Long Strings of Garbled Replies
Grok, xAI’s chatbot, recently suffered an unexpected glitch, causing some users to receive endless streams of garbled, nonsensical text on Grok.com. Users reported that after asking Grok to generate a PDF, the model repeatedly output incomprehensible sections, with some responses even including source links to websites focused on reinforcement learning research.

Reports indicate that affected users primarily utilized Grok Lite, with the issue first surfacing on Wednesday morning. Attempts to reproduce the error failed, suggesting the problem may only impact a small subset of users. While refreshing or restarting the session typically restored normal functionality for some, others continued to receive garbled text despite multiple refreshes. The issue appears to be isolated to direct queries on Grok.com, as Grok on X.com remains unaffected.
The official Grok account later confirmed the incident as a "rare, temporary generation failure," advising users that restarting the chat or regenerating the conversation usually resolves the issue immediately. The official status page currently shows all Grok services operating normally, with no recorded service incidents.
This incident unfolds as xAI faces significant personnel turnover. According to a May report by The Information, xAI has lost most of its founding team members and at least 50 researchers and engineers over the past few months. In July, xAI released its latest foundation model, Grok4.5, claiming it reached "Opus level" performance while offering faster speed, higher token efficiency, and lower costs. This anomaly underscores that stability in the reasoning, generation, and retrieval chains of large models remains a critical challenge for large-scale deployment.
