Shopify Sees Sevenfold Surge in AI Traffic and Elevenfold Boost in AI-Driven Orders Since January

E-commerce platform Shopify is enthusiastic about AI-powered shopping assistants, describing AI as an "extraordinary tool" for empowering entrepreneurs and labeling it the "most significant technological shift since the internet" during its Q3 earnings call. The company, which formed a partnership with ChatGPT creator OpenAI in September, revealed that traffic from AI tools to its online stores has grown sevenfold since January, with purchases from AI-powered searches surging elevenfold.
Shopify President Harley Finkelstein stated that the company's edge in the AI era stems from its access to data from millions of merchants and billions of transactions, coupled with its "founder mode" approach to rapidly launching products.
This extends to its internal tools, such as Scout, which employs AI to help Shopify staff sift through hundreds of millions of merchant feedback points to enhance product decisions.
"Scout is just one of many tools we're creating to transform our internal signals—from support tickets and usage data to reviews, social interactions, and Sidekick prompts—into swift, well-informed decisions," Finkelstein remarked on the call. "The key takeaway is this: AI is not merely a feature at Shopify. It is the core engine driving everything we develop."
Beyond ChatGPT, Shopify is collaborating with Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot on additional in-chat shopping experiences. A recent Shopify survey indicated that 64% of shoppers are "likely" to use AI to some degree during their purchasing process.
"We've been constructing and investing in this infrastructure to seamlessly integrate shopping into every AI conversation," Finkelstein explained. "Our partnerships with industry leaders demonstrate our commitment to ensuring Shopify merchants are better equipped than others. It's still very early stages, but our goal is to establish the foundation for agentic commerce."
Finkelstein also noted that while the company is currently focused on linking with AI agents, it is preparing for the "various directions" agentic commerce might take, meaning it must be ready for "whichever path prevails."
