Shopify: AI Search Fuels E-commerce Growth, Driving More Traffic and Sales Without Replacing Google

While many believe artificial intelligence is undermining traditional online publishing by reducing ad revenue and click-through rates, e-commerce platform Shopify is proving otherwise. During its recent second-quarter earnings call, CEO Harley Finkelstein revealed that AI search isn't replacing traditional search engines but is instead driving new traffic and sales growth, significantly helping small and medium-sized merchants on the platform.
Financial results for the second quarter were strong, with total revenue rising 36% year-over-year to $3.6 billion, beating Wall Street expectations, and gross profit increasing 31% to $171 million. The company credited part of this unexpected performance and revenue surge to the rapid expansion of AI search, noting that traffic and orders generated by AI tripled compared to the same period last year.
However, this growth doesn't mean AI is cannibalizing traditional search. Finkelstein noted that traditional search remains a major source of buyer traffic and continues to grow, with sessions increasing 1.3 times over the past two years and still accounting for about one-third of all store sessions. In their view, AI acts as a "complementor" to search, with synergistic effects between the two becoming increasingly apparent.
Regarding AI search efficiency, Shopify explained that while traditional search engines rely on keywords and popularity for ranking, AI agents can directly access vast product catalogs and structured data to accurately match complex buyer intent. For instance, when users search for products with specific specifications, AI agents consider multiple constraints to filter truly relevant items, rather than simply relying on keyword rankings.
This deep intent matching leads to higher conversion rates. Data shows that about half of AI-driven sessions directly lead to product detail pages, a conversion rate 2.5 times higher than that of traditional search. Additionally, 75% of AI-related purchases occur in long-tail products outside the top 100 popular categories, benefiting more small and medium-sized merchants. Currently, Shopify has integrated with numerous AI tools and vibe-coding platforms such as Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Manus, Replit, and Vercel, continuously expanding its presence in the AI transaction ecosystem.
