Regulatory Authorities Target Internet Ads Using 'Medical-Grade' as Marketing Ploy by AI Fraud Experts

False advertising, exaggerated product claims, and forged expert endorsements have become increasingly common in live-streaming e-commerce and short-video sales, sparking widespread public concern. In a recent investigation, CCTV News exposed numerous illegal practices that violate consumer rights.
Fake 'Medical Grade' Products and Bogus Experts Are Major Problem Areas
On a short-video platform, hosts promoted ordinary facial tissues as 'medical-grade,' misleading many consumers into making bulk purchases. Meanwhile, market regulators have investigated multiple fake ads that used AI to synthesize the images and voices of well-known experts.
These AI-generated videos trick consumers into believing products are endorsed by authoritative experts, severely disrupting market order. Similarly, some ordinary solid beverages were marketed as medicines claiming to treat gastritis, and those involved received heavy fines.
Six-Month Campaign to Combat AI Forgery
To address issues in online advertising, regulators have launched systematic governance measures. The State Administration for Market Regulation recently initiated a six-month campaign to restore order in the online advertising market, introducing for the first time the concept of 'ecological governance of online advertising.'
This campaign prioritizes rectifying illegal advertising in live-streaming e-commerce and AI-generated content, requiring strict action against using AI to impersonate experts and celebrities, and mandating clear labeling of AI advertisements. The Cyberspace Administration of China has also pushed for standardized labeling of short video content, making content tags a mandatory step in posting, thereby significantly improving advertising transparency.
