BYD Confirms Internal Deployment of 20,000 Self-Developed 'Yaoshunyu' Humanoid Robots in 2026
BYD Executive Vice President Li Ke has publicly confirmed for the first time that the company is steadily advancing its self-developed industrial humanoid robot project, codenamed "Yao Shun Yu." This marks the world's largest new energy vehicle manufacturer's formal launch of a second growth curve in embodied intelligence. The project was initiated by the 15th Business Unit in 2022, with technical support from the Central Research Institute, and currently has a core R&D team of over 4,000 people. As of May 2026, the prototype has evolved to the seventh generation, and the core component production lines are also in operation.
The "Yao Shun Yu" humanoid robot achieves a walking speed of 1.5 meters per second on two feet, with a rated load of 50 kilograms. It is equipped with a four-finger dexterous hand that has 16 degrees of freedom, along with a lidar and 6D tactile sensing system. Currently, around 150 prototypes have been deployed for training at factories in Shenzhen Pingshan and Changsha, reaching 80% of human worker efficiency in tasks such as handling and labeling. They have also achieved collaborative operations with UBTech Walker S1 robots and unmanned logistics equipment. According to the roadmap, BYD plans to deploy 2,000 units in small batches in 2025, expand internal deployment to 20,000 units in 2026, and achieve large-scale deployment by 2028.
Li Ke pointed out that the AI capabilities of cars and robots are highly similar. Leveraging annual sales exceeding 4.6 million units, the commonality rate of core components between BYD robots and its vehicles exceeds 60%, and the self-development rate of core components surpasses 80%. The company's self-developed 4nm intelligent driving chip, "Xuanji A3," which has already entered mass production, can also be transferred to robots in the future.
