Amazon introduced a new AI-driven feature on Tuesday that lets shoppers ask questions about products and receive real-time, conversational audio answers. These responses come from what the company describes as "AI-powered shopping experts," offering information in a natural, discussion-like format.
The "Join the chat" feature is designed to save time by delivering essential product details, eliminating the need to scroll through long descriptions or reviews. The AI aggregates insights about features, customer feedback, and other relevant data. For instance, shoppers can ask if a coffee maker is beginner-friendly or whether a sweater tends to be itchy, based on customer reviews.
Amazon says the AI avoids generic replies by building on earlier answers to provide more relevant and useful information, while also avoiding repetition. The aim is to mimic the experience of speaking with a well-informed store employee.
"Customers can ask questions and actively guide the conversation. Each question shapes what comes next, turning the experience into a dialogue they can join and personalize," the company states in a blog post.

"Join the chat" is part of a larger experience called "Hear the highlights," which provides brief audio summaries on millions of product pages in the Amazon Shopping app. The feature started testing last May and is now available in the U.S., though only certain products include audio summaries.
To use it, customers open a product page in the app and tap the "Hear the highlights" button below the product image. They can then listen to a quick overview or tap the "Join the chat" icon to ask specific questions by text or voice. The audio continues playing even while browsing.
The new feature expands Amazon's range of AI-powered shopping tools. These include Rufus, a generative AI assistant that helps customers research and compare products; Interests, which continuously monitors and surfaces new items matching a shopper's preferences; and "Help me decide," which recommends products based on search, browsing, and purchase history.
