User Services Disrupted Across ChatGPT Global Platform Due to Critical System Failure
Recently, OpenAI’s ChatGPT suffered a widespread service disruption that impacted users worldwide. Customers encountered difficulties logging in, creating new accounts, accessing past conversation histories, or sending messages as usual. The outage affected regions including the United States, Europe, and several other areas.
The issue started around 8 p.m. on August 19 according to U.S. Eastern Time. Users who tried to access ChatGPT found the page stuck on the loading animation displayed in the sidebar, along with error messages such as “Too many concurrent requests,” which prevented them from sending messages. Additionally, the account registration and login functions available on chatgpt.com were also impaired, causing some users to be unable to retrieve their previously saved chat records.

Beyond the main ChatGPT service, OpenAI’s coding platform Codex was also affected by this outage. OpenAI later confirmed the problem through its official status page, indicating that it had detected login issues among some users and was taking steps to address them and restore full service operations.
This disruption also impacted OpenAI’s API services. As shown on the OpenAI status page, multiple API endpoints experienced irregularities, which hindered developers from accessing related AI functionalities.
By around 8:15 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time, OpenAI confirmed that the failure was still ongoing and stated that its engineering team was working diligently to resolve it. This significant service interruption once again underscores the critical importance of stable AI infrastructure. As ChatGPT and other generative AI tools increasingly become essential services for both individual users and enterprise development workflows, platform reliability, response times to faults, and overall system resilience will serve as key factors in determining competitiveness among AI service providers.
