South Korea's hourly minimum wage to hit 50 RMB as AI benefits widen income gaps, spurring policy changes

South Korea's Minimum Wage Commission has approved the 2027 minimum wage plan, set to take effect on January 1, 2027. The new hourly rate is 10,700 won (approximately 50 Chinese yuan), a 3.7% increase from this year's standard, surpassing earlier market expectations.
Wage growth outpaces inflation, putting significant pressure on small businesses.
This wage increase exceeds South Korea's official 2026 CPI inflation forecast of 2.7%. Small business groups have warned that the rising minimum wage will significantly raise labor costs for small merchants and individual businesses, intensifying operational pressure on vulnerable SMEs. Based on the standard 209 monthly working hours, the new monthly minimum wage is 2.2363 million won (over 10,000 Chinese yuan), lifting the income floor for low-wage workers to a new level.
The AI industry boom serves as the underlying rationale for this wage adjustment.
South Korean economists have explained the rationale: as the global AI industry enters rapid growth, workers in the local semiconductor and storage sectors have seen their incomes rise accordingly. Without adjusting the minimum wage to narrow industry income gaps, ordinary service and blue-collar workers would not benefit from the AI boom—instead, income disparities would widen, intensifying social conflicts. This policy essentially redistributes some of the AI industry's gains to grassroots workers through institutional mechanisms, aiming to mitigate structural income inequality driven by technological change.
