Meta rolls out new AI content enforcement systems while reducing reliance on third-party vendors
Meta announced on Thursday that it is beginning to deploy more sophisticated AI systems for content moderation, aiming to reduce its dependence on external vendors. These systems will address tasks such as identifying and removing content related to terrorism, child exploitation, drugs, fraud, and scams.
The company stated that these advanced AI tools will be integrated across its applications once they consistently outperform existing content enforcement methods. Concurrently, Meta plans to decrease its reliance on third-party vendors for these moderation tasks.
“While human reviewers will remain part of the process, these systems will handle tasks better suited to technology, such as repetitive reviews of graphic content or areas where bad actors frequently adapt their tactics, like illicit drug sales or scams,” Meta explained in a blog post.
Meta asserts that these AI systems can detect more violations with higher accuracy, better prevent scams, respond more rapidly to real-world events, and reduce over-enforcement.
Early tests of the AI systems have shown promising results, detecting twice as much violating adult sexual solicitation content as human review teams while reducing the error rate by over 60%. The systems also identify and prevent more impersonation accounts involving celebrities and other high-profile individuals, and help stop account takeovers by detecting signals such as logins from new locations, password changes, or profile edits.
Additionally, Meta stated that the systems can identify and mitigate approximately 5,000 scam attempts per day, where scammers try to trick users into revealing their login credentials.
“Experts will design, train, oversee, and evaluate our AI systems, measuring performance and making the most complex, high-impact decisions,” Meta wrote in the blog post. “For example, humans will continue to play a key role in making the highest risk and most critical decisions, such as appeals of account disablement or reports to law enforcement.”
This move follows Meta’s recent relaxation of content moderation rules over the past year, coinciding with President Donald Trump’s return to office. Last year, the company ended its third-party fact-checking program in favor of a Community Notes-style model similar to X’s. It also lifted restrictions on “topics that are part of mainstream discourse” and encouraged users to take a “personalized” approach to political content.
This development occurs as Meta and other major tech companies face multiple lawsuits aimed at holding social media platforms accountable for harm to children and young users.
Meta also announced on Thursday the launch of a Meta AI support assistant, providing users with 24/7 access to support. The assistant is rolling out globally to the Facebook and Instagram apps for iOS and Android, as well as within the Help Center on Facebook and Instagram for desktop users.
