Two years ago, Google revamped its search experience to prioritize AI — now when you search, Google often displays an "AI Overview," which has received mixed reactions. Users quickly noticed how the feature could be misused, as it failed to detect sarcasm or unreliable sources. (For example, it cited The Onion when suggesting someone eat "one small rock per day," and used Reddit to recommend putting glue on pizza to make the cheese stick better.)
Although Google's AI Overviews have improved considerably, they still — like any LLM-powered system — can hallucinate. A recent New York Times analysis found that these overviews are accurate about 90% of the time. However, for a company handling trillions of queries annually, that success rate means hundreds of thousands of searches produce inaccurate results every minute.
Of course, not every query has a clear yes-or-no answer, which is why Google might want to include perspectives from forums where people discuss these topics — there's a reason many users append "Reddit" to their searches.
"For many searches, people are increasingly looking for advice from others," Google explains. "To help you find the most useful insights, AI responses will now include a preview of perspectives from public online discussions, social media, and other firsthand sources. We're also adding more context to these links, such as a creator's name, handle, or community name, to help you decide which discussions to read or join."
But now Google is complicating the purpose of its AI Overviews. Is it meant to answer a question, or to present a range of sources that might contain the answer? Doesn't that essentially function like a regular Google search?

Google will, at least, provide more context about the sources of its AI Overview comments, which may help users determine whether the information comes from a reliable source. This is similar to how ChatGPT or Claude sometimes include links meant to support their claims.
Still, we recommend verifying that the AI isn't hallucinating the accuracy of these citations.
