Google Photos adds AI wardrobe planning with auto classification, outfit suggestions and virtual try-on
On April 29, Google announced a generative AI-powered "Closet Planner" feature in Google Photos. Using deep learning, it automatically identifies, extracts, and categorizes clothing items from users' photo libraries to build a digital personal wardrobe. Following virtual try-on technology, this marks another key AI application in fashion interaction, designed to help users make outfit decisions more efficiently by organizing their existing photo assets.
At its core, this AI folder automatically filters items by categories like jewelry, tops, and bottoms, helping users rediscover what they already own. Users can mix and match different pieces to create virtual outfits and save them to digital mood boards for specific occasions—such as weddings, travel, or work. Importantly, the feature integrates advanced virtual try-on technology, allowing users to click "Try On" and see how an item looks on their own body, completing the journey from photo recall to pre-wear prediction.
According to reports, the feature will first launch on Android this summer, followed by iOS. Industry observers note that Google's move goes beyond image recognition, serving as a prime example of generative AI optimizing consumer-facing experiences. By transforming the photo album from a storage tool into a smart assistant offering fashion shopping guidance and styling suggestions, Google is strengthening its foothold in the mobile personal data ecosystem through AI.
