According to Bloomberg, this week's testimony from Google's antitrust trial revealed that the company pays Samsung a substantial monthly fee to preinstall the Gemini AI app on its devices. Following Judge Amit Mehta's ruling that Google's search engine operates as an illegal monopoly, its legal team is now debating the severity of potential penalties with the Department of Justice.
On Monday, Peter Fitzgerald, Google's Vice President of Platforms and Device Partnerships, confirmed that these payments to Samsung began in January. This occurred after Google was found guilty of antitrust violations, partly due to similar agreements with Apple, Samsung, and other companies concerning search. When Samsung introduced the Galaxy S25 series in January, it also set Gemini as the default AI assistant activated by a long press of the power button, relegating its own Bixby assistant to a secondary role.

The Information reports that Fitzgerald testified other companies, including Perplexity and Microsoft, had also approached Samsung with proposals to preinstall their AI assistant apps. However, a DOJ attorney noted that Google's letters seeking to amend its agreements with phone manufacturers were only sent last week, just before the trial. Internal slides presented during the hearing reportedly indicated that Google was exploring more restrictive distribution terms that would mandate partners to preinstall Gemini alongside Search and Chrome.
Bloomberg states that Fitzgerald described the Gemini arrangement as a two-year deal involving fixed monthly payments plus a share of Google's ad revenue from the app. DOJ lawyer David Dahlquist characterized the fixed payment as an "enormous sum," though the exact amount remains undisclosed.
Should the DOJ prevail, the outcome of these proceedings could prohibit Google from entering future default placement agreements, force the sale of Chrome, and require the company to license the majority of data that powers Google Search. Google has contended that it should only be required to relinquish default placement deals.
