AI has become a staple in the gaming industry. While some upcoming AAA titles remain cautious about generative AI, an increasing number of developers are actively adopting it. For instance, Ubisoft now requires all job applicants to have experience with generative AI. The lead developer of ARC Raiders stated that they are using AI to completely overhaul Nexon's development process.
Jack Buser, global head of Google Cloud Gaming, said in an interview that at least 90% of game developers are using AI tools. However, many choose not to disclose this due to fear of criticism. He noted that players might not realize their favorite games today are developed with AI assistance. A survey at last summer's Cologne Game Show found that around 90% of developers reported using AI.
Buser added that many studios use Google's generative AI tools like Gemini to accelerate development and bring popular titles to market faster. He stressed that this is a positive trend, as AI speeds up releases and reduces costs, enabling developers to take more creative risks.
Buser also shared that Capcom is using Gemini and Nano Banana to handle low-value tasks and generate game content. Capcom uses generative AI to brainstorm ideas for small assets like pebbles and grass. The art director then asks Gemini to filter the most creative designs, which the art team brings to life. This allows developers to focus on higher-priority tasks, such as designing enemies and main characters.
