Anthropic Launches Claude Code for Web Access

On Monday, Anthropic released a web application for its popular AI coding assistant, Claude Code, enabling developers to create and manage multiple AI coding agents directly from their browser.

Claude Code for the web is now available to subscribers of Anthropic's $20-per-month Pro plan, as well as its $100 and $200-per-month Max plans. Pro and Max users can access the tool by visiting claude.ai—the same site as the company's consumer chatbot—and selecting the "Code" tab, or through the Claude iOS app.

This launch represents Anthropic's latest move to expand Claude Code beyond its original form as a command-line interface (CLI) tool used in a terminal. By bringing the assistant to the web, Anthropic aims to make it easier for developers to start AI coding agents in various environments.

The market for AI coding tools is growing increasingly competitive. While Microsoft's GitHub Copilot was once the dominant player, Cursor, Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic now all offer highly capable alternatives—many of which are already accessible online. Despite this, Claude Code remains one of the most widely used tools. Since its broader release in May, the flagship coding product has grown its user base tenfold and now generates over $500 million in annualized revenue for the company.

In an interview with TechCrunch, Anthropic product manager Cat Wu attributed much of Claude Code's success to the company's AI models, which have gained significant popularity among developers in recent years. Wu also noted that the Claude Code team intentionally incorporates elements of fun into the product wherever possible.

Wu stated that Anthropic plans to make Claude Code available on more platforms, though the terminal will likely remain the core environment for the AI coding product.

"Looking ahead, a key priority is ensuring the CLI product is the most intelligent and customizable way to work with coding agents," Wu said. "At the same time, we're committed to making Claude Code accessible everywhere, meeting developers where they are. The launch on web and mobile is a major step in that direction."

Anthropic reports that 90% of the Claude Code product itself is written by the company's own AI models. Wu, a former engineer, mentioned that she rarely writes code manually anymore, focusing primarily on reviewing the outputs generated by Claude Code.

Early AI coding tools functioned primarily as autocomplete systems, suggesting the next line as developers typed. In contrast, modern agentic tools like Claude Code allow developers to create autonomous agents that work independently. This evolution has led millions of software engineers to take on more of a managerial role, overseeing AI coding assistants in their daily work.

Not all developers have welcomed this shift. A recent study found that some engineers actually worked slower when using AI coding tools like Cursor. Researchers suggested this could be because participants spent significant time crafting prompts and waiting for AI responses instead of tackling other tasks. Additionally, AI coding tools can struggle with large, complex codebases, potentially leading engineers to spend extra time correcting inaccurate AI suggestions.

Despite these challenges, companies like Anthropic continue to advance their AI coding agents. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei predicted several months ago that AI would soon be responsible for writing 90% of code for software engineers. While this may already be the case within Anthropic, this transition may take longer to materialize across the broader industry.
