Visa and OpenAI Partner to Reshape Shopping with AI-Powered Purchases

As artificial intelligence becomes a seamless part of daily life, the way we shop may soon see a fundamental shift. At the Visa Payment Forum in San Francisco on Wednesday, the payments giant officially announced a strategic partnership with OpenAI. By embedding Visa's global payment network directly into the OpenAI platform, AI agents are set to become active participants in consumer transactions.
In simpler terms, once you grant permission, AI assistants like ChatGPT will no longer just recommend products. They can actively compare prices and filter options across the web based on your needs, then independently handle the entire process from ordering to payment. During a live demonstration, when a user asked the AI to "find wireless headphones under $150," the AI quickly identified a suitable option and directly used the linked Visa card to complete the purchase—smoothly and automatically.
This isn't OpenAI's first attempt in e-commerce. In late 2025, the company tested a feature called "Instant Checkout" for fast payments, but it was discontinued in March this year due to high transaction error rates and merchant onboarding costs. Visa's involvement now fills a critical gap: Visa's robust infrastructure—including tokenization, instant authorization, and mature fraud detection—directly addresses the security and merchant access issues that plagued earlier payment scenarios, removing technical barriers for AI-driven shopping.
For consumers, fund security is the top concern. To prevent AI from making unauthorized purchases, both parties have built multiple safeguards into the collaboration framework. Users can set explicit limits on individual purchases, control spending through pre-approved thresholds, and create whitelists of trusted merchants.
Although specific commercial terms haven't been disclosed, this move has already sent ripples through the payment industry. Mastercard had previously tested similar features on a small scale, but mainly for enterprise procurement. With Visa's strong partnership with OpenAI, the role of AI shopping assistants has evolved from a simple "intelligent guide" to a true "personal shopper," and the rules of online retail may be rewritten from now on.
