UK Pilots AI Training Camp: Using AI to Tackle Youth Unemployment, 70 NEET Youth Start Learning First
In a strategic move to address dual economic challenges, the UK government is leveraging artificial intelligence to combat youth unemployment, aiming to empower young workers rather than risk displacing them. A pilot initiative in Preston, northwest England, has launched an AI bootcamp at a youth center near the station, providing targeted tech training for individuals aged 16 to 24.
Intensive Training Paired with Direct Employer Apprenticeships
The program targets NEETs (Not in Education, Employment, or Training) aged 16 to 24, a demographic comprising nearly one million young people in the UK, or just over 10% of their age group. With 70 participants enrolled in this taxpayer-funded initiative, the three-week curriculum focuses on practical skills: building AI tools, understanding corporate AI integration, and applying the technology responsibly.
Major brands including JD Sports, Heinz, and Agilysys have partnered with the program to offer direct AI apprenticeships upon graduation. Trainees can choose between roles in content creation, such as training AI marketing specialists, or IT service desk positions requiring technical AI proficiency. Lauren Monks, an executive at the IN4 Group managing the project, emphasized that the goal is to bridge talent gaps, boost productivity, and assist organizations in effectively implementing AI solutions.
Student Qudsiya Rafiq, 18, noted that understanding AI is crucial for any future career path. Meanwhile, 17-year-old Remy Sims shared that the course shifted his perspective, helping him realize that humans can collaborate with AI rather than compete against it.
Addressing Root Causes Through Comprehensive Strategies
Former Labour cabinet minister Alan Milburn has warned in a recent report that failing to act on the NEET crisis could result in a "lost generation" for the UK. He advocates for welfare system reforms, noting that previous government employment support schemes have fallen short of solving the issue comprehensively.
Dr. Booky Klein Tisseling, a King’s College London researcher specializing in AI and future employment, highlighted that there is limited in-depth research on how AI impacts non-graduate job markets compared to graduate sectors. He argues that the true measure of the bootcamp’s success lies in the quality of training and whether new hires can demonstrably enhance employer productivity.
Chris Goulder, deputy CEO of Youth Futures, clarified that the rise in NEETs stems primarily from post-pandemic mental health struggles and broader economic weakness, rather than AI alone. However, he cautioned against complacency, noting that AI applications are expanding daily and affecting numerous roles. He concluded that if AI threatens entry-level opportunities, it is essential to equip young people with these skills as a proactive response.
