Twitch defaults to using streamer content to train Amazon AI model sparking community backlash
Twitch, the leading live streaming service, has announced plans to leverage creators’ broadcast content to train generative AI models for its parent company, Amazon. This decision has triggered significant backlash from the creator community, particularly due to the policy’s default “opt-in” mechanism. Under this framework, streamers must actively opt out to prevent their audio and video from being used for AI training—a process that many find counterintuitive and potentially overlooked.
During a recent AMA on Twitch’s official channel, Community Manager Mary Kish and Chief Product Officer Mike Minton fielded questions from nearly 3,000 viewers. When confronted with widespread inquiries about why the setting wasn’t “opt-out by default,” Minton bluntly stated that an opt-out default would result in negligible voluntary participation.

Twitch executives acknowledged the platform’s awareness of the broad skepticism surrounding generative AI, noting that most AI systems currently train on publicly available internet data without explicit creator consent. To mitigate backlash, Twitch framed the initiative as an optional opt-out feature for Amazon’s broader AI training efforts. However, this approach has left many streamers anxious and confused about whether their content is already being harvested without their knowledge.
Kish explained that offering an opt-out aligns with the community’s strong stance against contributing to AI training. Despite providing this choice, the move underscores the ongoing tension between tech platforms and creators regarding copyright and data ownership—a conflict mirrored by other major tech companies that utilize public data for AI development.
Streamers who wish to exclude their content from AI training can currently disable the “Generative AI Training” setting. This option is located under the “Safety & Privacy” tab in channel settings, distinct from the Creator Dashboard. Users must manually toggle this feature off to ensure their content is not used.
