Sora, OpenAI's AI video generator, is officially launching on Android for users in the United States, Canada, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
First released as an iOS app in September, Sora rapidly climbed to the top of the App Store charts, gaining over one million downloads in just one week. Its arrival on the Google Play Store is set to expand its reach significantly, likely triggering another major wave of installs.
The Android app includes all the features found in the iOS version. This includes the "Cameos" feature, which lets users create videos of themselves performing various activities using their own digital likeness.
Users can share these videos in a TikTok-like feed, where they can also discover and interact with content from other creators. This expansion appears to be a strategic play by OpenAI to solidify its standing in the competitive short-form video market. The AI leader is positioning itself to challenge giants like Meta—which recently debuted its own AI video feed, Vibes—as well as established platforms such as TikTok and Instagram.

Despite its popularity, the app has drawn criticism over its handling of deepfake technology. Shortly after launch, users began generating disrespectful videos of historical figures, including Martin Luther King Jr. In response, Sora temporarily halted the generation of content featuring Dr. King last month and reinforced its safety protocols.
The company also recently revised its policy concerning copyrighted characters like SpongeBob and Pikachu. It shifted from an "opt-out" model to an "opt-in" system, requiring explicit permission from rights holders.
Sora is also currently engaged in a legal battle with the celebrity video platform Cameo over the naming of its flagship "Cameo" feature.
Looking forward, OpenAI has plans to add more capabilities to Sora. Upcoming features include character cameos, allowing users to star their pets or even inanimate objects in AI-generated videos. Basic video editing tools are also in development, such as the ability to combine multiple clips. Furthermore, Sora intends to offer users more control over their social feeds, enabling them to curate content from specific creators instead of a broad, algorithmic stream.
