Siri AI Arrives With Google Inside, Leaving Much of the World Locked Out

“We’ve all experienced that frustrating moment when you know an item exists, yet it refuses to appear.” Speaking at WWDC 2026, Apple’s Stacey Ford, vice president of OS Program Management, referenced Spotlight, though her words perfectly captured the company’s broader AI strategy.

On Monday at Apple Park, the elusive feature finally materialized: Siri AI, a complete overhaul after years of unmet expectations. This new Siri supports authentic multi-turn conversations, accesses data from your emails, messages, and photo library, handles live web queries, and executes tasks across various apps.

Apple is launching a dedicated Siri app alongside system-wide integration, with iPhones displaying activity in the Dynamic Island during requests. While this was the version showcased on stage, the real story lies in the details: who powers Siri AI, and who actually has access to it.

Google under the hood

Apple’s most significant revelation was subtle. The company announced a collaboration with Google and the Gemini model family to develop the next generation of Apple Foundation Models, which power Apple Intelligence and serve as the architecture for Siri AI. After two years of claiming its in-house models would close the gap, Apple’s answer to how it caught up is clear: it didn’t do it alone.

The company spent considerable time addressing potential concerns. “We believe privacy in AI is non-negotiable,” stated senior vice president Craig Federighi, adding that “data is only used to execute your request, and outside experts can verify this promise at any time.”

While the privacy architecture may be sound, the strategic implications are harder to ignore. Apple now relies on its largest search competitor for the core intelligence of its assistant, while Google distributes Gemini across Android, Workspace, and its own hardware. Regardless of the agreement terms, Apple has acknowledged that the frontier model race is one it could not win on its own timeline—a concession with significant implications beyond Cupertino.

If the world’s most valuable hardware company, leveraging its silicon advantages and vast resources, chose licensing over building, then the sovereign AI strategies being drafted globally deserve a more realistic assessment of what “building our own model” truly entails.

The Siri AI rollout map tells its own story

Then there is the question of accessibility. The initial beta, arriving later this year, supports only English. China is entirely excluded due to unresolved regulatory requirements, and EU users will not see the assistant on iPhone or iPad at launch. Apple states a path forward is being developed; meanwhile, its updated press release confirms EU availability is initially limited to macOS 27 and visionOS 27.

Viewing this rollout from Asia reveals glaring gaps. China, Apple’s most contested market, is excluded outright, while domestic assistants from Chinese vendors operate without restriction. An English-only beta leaves Mandarin, Japanese, Korean, Bahasa, and Hindi speakers—representing most iPhone users in the world’s fastest-growing smartphone markets—stuck with the old Siri for an unspecified duration.

Apple provided no timeline for additional languages. The company, known for shipping the same product globally on the same day, has released its most important software update in years exclusively for English speakers, excluding China entirely and iPhone users in the EU.

Catching up, by Apple’s own staging

The keynote’s structure was revealing. TechCrunch noted that Apple began by fixing broken elements before showcasing new features, positioning the upgraded Siri as just one item on a long list rather than the main attraction.

This also marks a transition period. It was Tim Cook’s final WWDC as CEO before John Ternus, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering, assumes leadership on September 1. “I truly believe the best is still ahead at Apple,” Cook said in his closing remarks.

Perhaps. Siri AI is now a tangible product, and the demos suggest Apple’s integration expertise remains strong. However, Ternus inherits an assistant powered by Google’s models and a rollout plan that requires most of the world to wait. The catch-up, it turns out, has only just begun.
