OpenAI Codex Individual User Usage Surges 137 Times, AI Programming Has Gone Beyond Programmers
On June 25, OpenAI published a report highlighting substantial growth for its AI agent product, Codex, since August 2025. Individual user activity jumped 137-fold, organizational adoption surged 189-fold, and internal usage at OpenAI increased 12-fold. These figures suggest that Codex’s user base has rapidly expanded beyond professional developers to encompass a much wider audience.
Non-technical users are the primary catalyst for this growth, demonstrating strong proficiency in managing long-term tasks.
Inside OpenAI, daily Codex usage has risen to 97.9% among employees, up from approximately 40% in August 2025. External organizational adoption has also climbed to 17.3%, with growth rates continuing to accelerate. Overall, active users of agent AI in the first half of 2026 have grown by more than five times, with the fastest-growing segment being non-technical users outside the software development community.
OpenAI also highlighted Codex’s unique capability as an agent AI to handle long-term tasks continuously. Since early 2026, the share of Codex users submitting at least one task estimated to take over eight hours for a human has increased nearly tenfold. This indicates the product is rapidly evolving from a simple auxiliary tool into a collaborative partner capable of independently executing complex work.
This data reflects a fundamental shift in the AI programming tools market—once dominated by developers, it is now being reshaped by broader office scenarios and general user needs. As non-programmers increasingly complete complex tasks through natural language-driven AI, Codex’s growth trajectory may simply mark the beginning of true AI democratization.
