Microsoft has begun deploying streamlined taskbar applications for Microsoft 365 subscribers on Windows 11. These lightweight utilities automatically activate during system startup, offering convenient taskbar access to essential productivity tools including contact directories, document search, and scheduling functions.
Dubbed as "companion apps" by Microsoft, these integrations are becoming available to enterprise Microsoft 365 clients this month. The People application delivers organizational chart functionality combined with comprehensive employee directory features. Users can view colleague profiles and initiate various communication channels including Teams messaging, voice calls, or direct emails with simple clicks.

Supporting multiple search criteria including filename, content author, and keyword matching, it scans across connected Microsoft 365 services including OneDrive, SharePoint, Teams file repositories, and Outlook attachments. The solution includes document preview capabilities alongside comprehensive filtering and sharing options.
Meanwhile, the Calendar integration presents a condensed view of scheduled activities, enabling users to check forthcoming appointments, locate specific events, or join scheduled meetings without navigating to full applications.
Following several months of beta testing after their initial reveal at last year's Ignite conference, these productivity enhancements are now transitioning to general availability for commercial Microsoft 365 subscribers. Unlike the automated installation process during the beta period, current deployment requires explicit approval from IT administrators before implementation on Windows 11 devices. Once operational, end users retain control over startup behavior and can disable automatic launch if preferred.
