On Friday, Microsoft announced a series of updates aimed at enhancing the quality of its Windows 11 operating system, most notably reducing the number of access points for its AI assistant, Copilot.
The company stated that it will scale back Copilot AI integrations in certain apps, beginning with Photos, Widgets, Notepad, and the Snipping Tool.
Under the banner of “integrating AI where it truly adds value,” Pavan Davuluri, Microsoft’s EVP of Windows and Devices, explained in a company blog post that the team is becoming more deliberate about “how and where Copilot integrates across Windows.” The goal, he noted, is to focus on AI features that are “genuinely useful.”
This “less is more” strategy for embedding AI into existing platforms may reflect growing consumer pushback against AI bloat. While many people now see AI as a helpful tool, concerns around trust and safety remain. For example, a Pew Research study published this month found that as of June 2025, half of U.S. adults are now more worried than excited about AI, up from 37% in 2021.
This is not the first time Microsoft has reconsidered its Copilot integrations. Earlier this month, the news site Windows Central reported that the company had quietly shelved its plan to ship Copilot-branded AI features across Windows 11, including some system-level integrations within the Settings app, File Explorer, and elsewhere.
Before that, Microsoft delayed the launch of its AI-powered memory feature, Windows Recall for Copilot + PCs, for over a year while working to address user privacy concerns. The Recall feature debuted last April, but security vulnerabilities continue to be discovered.
It’s clear that user feedback is shaping Microsoft’s AI decisions on Windows. Davuluri wrote that he and his team have spent the past several months listening to the community about how they would like to see Windows improve.
The Copilot rollback is just one of the changes underway.
The company also noted it is introducing the ability to move the taskbar to the top or sides of the screen, giving users greater control over system updates, speeding up File Explorer, improving the Widgets experience, updating the Feedback Hub, and making it easier to navigate its Windows Insider Program — a community that provides feedback on Windows’ future.
