HomeMeta to End US Fact-Checking Program
Meta's US fact-checking program will conclude by Monday afternoon. Joel Kaplan, Meta's Head of Global Policy, stated in an X post that there will be "no new fact checks and no fact-checkers" across Facebook, Instagram, and Threads by that deadline, as the company transitions to its Community Notes system.
Meta initially announced its plans for an X-inspired Community Notes program back in January, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg describing it as "less prone to bias." Through Community Notes, contributors can both write and evaluate notes that offer additional context for specific posts.
The company began testing Community Notes on March 18th but clarified that notes wouldn't be publicly displayed initially. Now, Kaplan confirms that Community Notes will begin "appearing gradually across Facebook, Threads, and Instagram, with no penalties attached."
Meta continues to utilize its third-party fact-checking program in countries outside the United States. The company intends to expand Community Notes to additional countries in the future.
