KPMG Study Reveals Major Challenge: Just 26% of Global Firms Capable of Full AI Cost Management
As reported by The Wall Street Journal on June 8, 2026, as artificial intelligence services increasingly adopt a token-based billing system, corporate finance teams worldwide are encountering unprecedented difficulties in managing their budgets.
Results from an unpublished survey conducted by KPMG reveal that currently only 26% of organizations have a clear understanding of their AI-related expenses. Additionally, 50% of enterprises lack substantial control over their AI spending, while another 22% experience complete transparency gaps, only becoming aware of service usage after receiving invoices.

Steve Chase, KPMG’s Global Head of AI, explained that tokens, as a resource experiencing rapid growth, are being utilized at a pace far beyond what companies anticipated. Several firms have already exhausted their annual AI budgets within just a few months, and in some cases, customer token usage has even risen sixfold. Analysts compare this surge in AI spending to the cloud computing boom that occurred during the pandemic and predict that many chief financial officers will face significant financial shocks each quarter when dealing with high bills from providers such as Anthropic.
