India's Emversity Valuation Doubles as It Trains Workers AI Cannot Replace

As AI automates certain workforce functions, Emversity, an Indian workforce-training startup, is developing talent pipelines for roles it believes AI cannot replace. The company has secured $30 million in a new funding round to expand its job-ready training programs in the world's most populous market.

The all-equity Series A round was led by Premji Invest, with participation from Lightspeed Venture Partners and Z47, the Bengaluru-based startup announced on Thursday. Sources confirmed to TechCrunch that the funding values Emversity at approximately $120 million post-money, up from about $60 million in its April 2025 pre-Series A round. Total raised capital now reaches $46 million.

India continues to face a widening skills gap, with many graduates lacking job-ready skills even as key service sectors struggle to find qualified staff. In healthcare, the Indian government reports about 4.3 million registered nursing personnel and 5,253 nursing institutions producing roughly 387,000 nurses annually, yet recent studies still highlight significant shortages. Similarly, the hospitality industry faces a 55% to 60% demand-supply gap for workers, according to industry estimates.

Emversity aims to address this gap by integrating employer-designed training programs into university curricula and operating skill centers affiliated with the Indian government's National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) for short-term certifications and job placements.

The two-year-old startup has partnered with 23 universities and colleges across more than 40 campuses, focusing on "grey-collar" roles—positions requiring hands-on training and credentials—including nurses, physiotherapists, medical lab technicians, and hospitality positions such as guest relations and food and beverage service.

Emversity has trained approximately 4,500 learners to date and successfully placed 800 candidates in jobs, according to founder and CEO Vivek Sinha (pictured above) in an interview.

Sinha, who previously served as chief operating officer at Indian edtech startup Unacademy for over three years before founding Emversity in 2023, told TechCrunch he first conceived the idea while developing test-preparation courses for entry-level government jobs. He observed that applicants included engineers, MBAs, and even PhD holders.

"I began speaking with these learners," he explained. "Some had paid tuition to private colleges and invested 16 to 18 years earning their degrees."

Sinha noted that the skills gap has expanded in recent years and may widen further as automation and new workplace tools reshape employer expectations for entry-level hires. Meanwhile, demand remains robust in credentialed fields like healthcare, where hands-on training and staffing ratios remain critical.

"AI can reduce administrative tasks for nurses, such as documenting patient details or managing electronic medical records," Sinha stated. "However, AI cannot replace a nurse when you still need one for every two beds in an ICU."

Emversity collaborates with employers including Fortis Healthcare, Apollo Hospitals, Aster, KIMS, IHCL (Taj Hotels), and Lemon Tree Hotels to co-design role-specific training modules. These are then integrated into university degree programs. The startup does not charge employers, instead generating revenue through fees from partner institutions and short-term certification programs at its NSDC-affiliated skill centers.

The startup operates with gross margins of around 80% and maintains customer acquisition costs below 10% of revenue by primarily relying on organic channels rather than performance marketing, Sinha shared.

He added that Emversity offers a career counseling platform for high school students, which generated over 350,000 inquiries and contributed to more than 20% of revenue last year.

With the new funding, Emversity plans to expand to over 200 locations within the next two years, deepen its focus on healthcare and hospitality, and enter new industries such as engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) and manufacturing. The startup is already in advanced discussions with one of India's leading EPC companies to design and launch role-specific programs this year, with manufacturing-focused training scheduled to begin next year, Sinha said.

To ensure consistent outcomes across campuses, Emversity combines employer-led curriculum design with practical training infrastructure, including simulation labs for clinical roles like nursing and emergency care.

Last year, Emversity's revenue was nearly evenly split between its university-embedded training programs and short-term certification courses offered through its skill centers, Sinha noted.

While Emversity currently builds talent pipelines for domestic employers, Sinha sees future opportunities to meet international demand, particularly in healthcare, as aging populations in markets like Japan and Germany seek trained professionals. However, he did not specify a timeline for expanding globally.

Emversity employs about 700 people, including 200 to 250 trainers deployed across its campus network.

Interesting how they're betting on roles AI can't replace, but honestly, who knows what's next? 😅 Still, $30M for job training sounds like a solid bet.
