Hugging Face, the world's largest open-source AI community, recently revealed that its servers were compromised by an AI-driven hacker. In response, the security team initially tried to analyze over 17,000 attack-related logs using an API from a leading US commercial large language model. However, the model struggled to differentiate between the attackers and the incident response team, causing the security system to misclassify requests and ultimately deny analysis support.
Following that, Hugging Face deployed the Chinese open-source model GLM5.2 on its own infrastructure to perform forensic analysis on the extensive security logs, successfully completing the incident investigation.
This incident underscores that as AI agents become more involved in cyberattacks, security analysis requires large models with enhanced understanding, reasoning, and deployment capabilities. Compared to cloud-based commercial APIs, locally deployed open-source models provide greater flexibility in data security, access control, and task customization, while also avoiding disruptions caused by platform security policies.
