Google Vids App Introduces Prompt-Driven Avatar Control
Google has introduced a suite of new features for its Vids video editor, enabling users to direct and customize avatars via text prompts, integrating the Veo 3.1 model, offering direct YouTube exports, and adding a screen recording Chrome extension.
Users can now employ natural language prompts to guide avatars to perform specific actions within a scene, such as interacting with a product or piece of equipment. Google emphasizes that Vids maintains consistent character portrayal despite these dynamic outputs.
The update allows for character customization based on the video's theme. Users can modify an avatar's appearance, change its clothing, and generate new backgrounds—all through simple text instructions.
Following last month's addition of the Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro music models for soundtracks and effects, Google is now integrating the Veo 3.1 video generation model. This tool can create eight-second clips directly within the editor. All users receive 10 free generations monthly, while Google AI Ultra and Workspace AI Ultra subscribers can generate up to 1,000 Veo videos per month.
Furthermore, users can now export their finished videos directly to YouTube, eliminating the need to download and manually upload files. By default, all exported videos are set to private, allowing for review before publication.

A new screen recording Chrome extension is also part of the update, allowing users to capture their screen with accompanying audio or video commentary.
Since its initial unveiling in 2024 for enterprise content creation, Google has consistently expanded Vids' capabilities. The platform introduced AI avatars and later opened access to consumers. Earlier this year, Google added 2D and 3D cartoon-style avatars and expanded voiceover support to include seven new languages: French, German, Italian, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Japanese.
Google Vids competes in a growing market with rivals like Synthesia, HeyGen, D-ID, and Lemon Slice.
