Google Limits Meta’s Access to Gemini Amid Computing Power Shortage
Amidst a persistent global cloud capacity crunch, Google has imposed usage limits on Meta’s access to its flagship AI model, Gemini. Previously integral to Meta’s automated security infrastructure for high-volume tasks like fraud detection and content moderation, Gemini’s performance had notably outpaced Meta’s open-source Llama system.

Despite Google reporting $20 billion in cloud revenue for the first quarter, the expansion of its physical infrastructure has lagged behind surging AI inference demands. This throttling of resources has consequently delayed several of Meta’s internal AI initiatives.
In response to this infrastructure constraint, Meta’s leadership has directed staff to optimize AI token efficiency. Simultaneously, this reliance on a competitor has hastened Meta’s drive for self-reliance. Driven by its newly formed "Super Intelligence Lab," Meta is transitioning its core security and moderation workloads to its proprietary "Muse Spark" model.
This restriction highlights a critical shift in the AI sector: the primary bottleneck is no longer algorithms or talent, but physical resources like chips, energy, and data centers. Consequently, major tech firms are accelerating their transition from external cloud dependencies to expensive, self-built infrastructure.
