Google to End Software Updates for Older Nest Thermostat Models

Google to End Software Updates for Older Nest Thermostat Models

Google has officially announced the end of software updates and remote app functionality for its first-generation Nest Learning Thermostat (released in 2011) and the second-generation model that followed in 2012. This change also applies to the European version of the Nest Learning Thermostat launched in 2014. According to a company blog post, users will lose the ability to control these thermostats remotely via their smartphone or Google Assistant. However, manual temperature adjustments and schedule changes directly on the device will still be possible.

Support within the Google Home and Nest apps, including software updates, will be discontinued after October 25th.

This means phone-based control for these "smart" thermostats will cease to function.

In a related development, Google has confirmed it has no plans to introduce new Nest thermostat models in the European market. The company cited the region's unique and diverse heating system requirements as a significant challenge. While current inventories last, the Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd generation, 2015) and the Nest Thermostat E (2018) will remain available for purchase in Europe.

For long-time Nest owners, losing smartphone control is a significant inconvenience that undermines much of the product's original appeal and convenience. Although core heating functions will remain intact, the winding down of software support marks the end of key smart features. On a practical note, the earliest Nest Learning Thermostat models can still operate locally without Wi-Fi—an option not available with newer versions. Owners of recent Nest Thermostat models do have one upcoming feature to look forward to: Google has announced that schedule creation and adjustment via the Google Home app will be introduced later this year.

This phase-out highlights a common concern with smart home devices, especially as companies integrate digital interfaces into more appliances. Is a 14-year functional lifespan reasonable before a device's "smart" capabilities expire? Google has not indicated any plans to open-source the hardware to extend its usability.

In response to potential customer dissatisfaction, Google is offering promotional discounts: a $130 reduction on the fourth-generation Nest Learning Thermostat in the US, $160 off in Canada, and 50 percent savings on the Tado Smart Thermostat X in Europe, where the Nest lineup is being discontinued.

The original Nest thermostats were launched when the company was an independent entity led by former Apple executive Tony Fadell. Google later acquired Nest in 2014 for $3.2 billion.

So they're basically killing off perfectly good hardware just to push people into buying newer models? Classic planned obsolescence. 😒 I mean, the Nest Thermostat was already a pretty simple device - why does it need constant cloud connectivity to function? This is exactly why I'm hesitant to invest in 'smart' home stuff. #RIPNest
