Google's Android chief has confirmed the company's intention to merge its mobile operating system with ChromeOS, the platform currently powering Google's Chromebook laptops.
Sameer Samat, President of the Android Ecosystem at Google, informed TechRadar that "Chrome OS and Android will be unified into a single platform." Samat, who oversees Android's expansion across mobile, wearables, XR, TV, and automotive sectors, also mentioned his interest in "how consumers utilize their laptops today," hinting at potential new responsibilities.
This statement represents the most definitive acknowledgment of a transition that has been speculated about for months. In November 2024, Android Authority revealed Google's plan to "transition ChromeOS to the Android framework," targeting competition with iPad. The transformation appears underway, following Google's June announcement that ChromeOS would increasingly "build upon core components of the Android architecture." Chromebooks already support numerous Android applications.
Concurrently, Android is adopting more ChromeOS-like capabilities this year through enhancements such as desktop mode, adjustable window sizes, and refined external display compatibility.
The consolidation of Google's dual operating systems presents compelling advantages theoretically, enabling accelerated feature development and improved tablet functionality - an area where both current platforms trail Apple's iPadOS. Nevertheless, this strategic move has been anticipated for years, with initial merger reports surfacing a decade ago in 2015, while The Verge advocated for their integration as early as 2013. Although this transition has been long anticipated, its complete realization may still require substantial time.
