General Catalyst leads $1.1B funding round for River AI

River AI, an artificial intelligence startup established by xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin, has raised $1.1 billion in a seed and Series A funding round. The investment was led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, with additional participation from Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator, and Temasek.
AMP PBC is an AI-focused investment firm established in 2026 by Anjney Midha, a former general partner at Andreessen Horowitz. Midha has backed notable companies within the a16z portfolio, including Black Forest Labs, Mistral AI, LMArena, and OpenRouter.
River emerged from stealth mode in June with a compelling mission. Babuschkin, who previously held AI roles at DeepMind and OpenAI, aims to rebuild artificial intelligence from the ground up, starting with model training. The goal is to create personally trainable agents rather than following the industry trend of replacing human workers.
“To achieve this, we believe the entire stack must be rebuilt from end to end: training, models, the product layer, and new hardware that enables personal AI to operate close to you,” he stated in his launch blog.
“Capable agents will become a standard part of daily life. They will function less like the assistants you summon for specific tasks and more like guardian angels: quietly present, supportive, and focused on what truly matters to you. They will understand you deeply and belong exclusively to you, not to third parties,” he explained.
River currently provides an API priced per one million tokens, with costs varying based on the open model selected. The API enables developers to apply both reinforcement learning (RL) and low-rank adaptation (LoRA) fine-tuning to the models. This initial product aims to replace prompt engineering. “Prompting directs a model you do not own and cannot enhance. River allows you to train open models to become truly yours, serving them through any standard endpoint,” the product documentation states.
Although this substantial investment in a young company may signal an overheated AI market, River’s concept arrives at a favorable moment. Enterprises are increasingly seeking control over their AI strategies by utilizing a combination of models, including open-weight options. River addresses the post-training expertise gap with its neocloud services.
“Any enterprise can execute a complex reinforcement learning process in 15 to 20 minutes without requiring an infrastructure team, achieving cost savings of two to four times compared to closed-source alternatives,” the funding announcement notes.
The company’s broader vision is that everyone will possess their own agents, trained by individuals and working on their behalf. This concept is already gaining traction through the emergence of personal, locally running agents like OpenClaw and its derivatives. Additionally, Nvidia is collaborating with PC manufacturers such as Dell, Microsoft, and HP to develop AI-capable hardware.
It remains unclear how River’s technology will differentiate itself. However, the company is launching with significant financial resources to pursue its goals.
