Google's Gemini Ushers In Major New Era of Smart Home Ambitions

Google's Gemini Ushers In Major New Era of Smart Home Ambitions

It’s official: Google Assistant for the home is getting a major upgrade with Gemini. Announced today, "Gemini for Home" is a brand-new voice assistant destined for Google Home, scheduled to launch later this year.

Powered by Google's Gemini AI, this new assistant is set to eventually replace Google Assistant on Nest smart speakers and displays. It will offer hands-free control for smart lights, music, timers, and answering questions. The rollout starts in October through an early access program, featuring both free and paid tiers. You'll still activate it with "Hey Google," and it will work seamlessly across all your home devices for every household member and guest.

Google's timing is noteworthy. While the company has pioneered AI on mobile devices with its smarter, LLM-powered phone assistant, it has trailed behind in the home sector. Amazon's generative AI-powered Alexa Plus is already in millions of homes.

In contrast, Google's recent Gemini updates for the home have felt like small steps—new voices, slightly more conversational replies, AI features for Nest cameras and automations, and a Gemini option on select speakers. These were glimpses of the future but fell short of a complete overhaul.

Gemini for Home is that complete overhaul—a whole new voice assistant. It could represent the most significant change for Google Home since the debut of its first smart display over six years ago.

According to a blog post by Anish Kattukaran, Chief Product Officer for Google Home and Nest, using Gemini for Home will "feel fundamentally new." He states the assistant leverages the "advanced reasoning, inference, and search capabilities" of Google's AI models, alongside home-specific adaptations for more natural interactions with complex tasks. In essence, it should be an assistant that better understands context, nuance, and intent—a total departure from its predecessor.

The launch of Gemini for Home officially starts the race for the most reliable and capable smart home assistant.

For instance, Kattukaran explains that Gemini for Home can accurately handle requests like "turn off the lights everywhere except my bedroom," "play that song from this year's summer blockbuster about race cars," or "set a timer for perfectly blanched broccoli." It will also create lists, calendar events, and reminders more intuitively than before.

A major upgrade is the inclusion of Gemini Live, enabling more conversational, back-and-forth voice interactions on Google Home without constantly repeating "Hey Google." Kattukaran says this allows for detailed, personalized assistance—from cooking ("I have spinach, eggs, cream cheese, and smoked salmon. Help me make a delicious meal") to brainstorming car purchases, troubleshooting a dishwasher, or even generating bedtime stories.

If this sounds familiar, it should. These are features also offered by Alexa Plus, including enhanced smart home control, kitchen help, and household troubleshooting. Alexa Plus also has some autonomous capabilities, using services like Thumbtack and OpenTable. With Gemini for Home's launch, the competition for the best smart home voice assistant is on—and we're still waiting for the third major player, Apple, to join the race.

Google hasn't announced pricing for the paid tier of Gemini for Home, but Gemini Live's advanced features are a likely candidate for a premium plan. Amazon has adopted a subscription model for Alexa Plus, bundling it with Prime. Google may follow a similar strategy, potentially bundling it with Nest Aware or Google One plans. It recently raised the price of Nest Aware to $10 per month without major new features.

New Google Nest hardware is likely to arrive this fall.

While Google says Gemini for Home arrives in October, don't expect an immediate, widespread release. Google typically tests new features through its Google Home Public Preview program and has previously restricted access to some Gemini features for select users. A cautious, phased rollout is expected, similar to Amazon's approach with Alexa Plus. Integrating generative AI into the smart home requires extra care, especially when it involves controlling critical devices like locks, appliances, and HVAC systems.

All of this highlights a persistent question for Google Home: where is the new hardware? Aside from the Pixel Tablet, Google hasn't updated its smart speakers or displays since 2021. Given that Gemini for Home is a major platform upgrade, it's highly likely that new hardware designed to showcase its capabilities will launch alongside it this autumn.

Finally, Google's making a real move in the smart home AI race! I'm curious how Gemini will handle complex, multi-step requests compared to Alexa or Siri. Hope it's not just another hype cycle and actually delivers on the 'major upgrade' promise. The privacy implications of a more powerful home AI are a bit concerning though. 🤔

Kinda skeptical about another 'major new era' announcement from big tech... I'll believe it when I see it actually understand 'turn off the kitchen light' on the first try without a weird follow-up question. Still, if the Gemini smarts work as promised, it could finally make voice assistants feel less like talking to a confused toddler. 🤔
