First AI-Generated Linux Kernel Driver, Powered by Codex GPT-5.5, Controls AMD Chipset Temperature

On May 11, the Linux kernel accepted its first hardware driver explicitly flagged as AI-generated code: prom21-xhci. This marks a real step forward for artificial intelligence in system-level, low-level development. Created primarily with OpenAI’s coding agent Codex GPT-5.5, the driver was spearheaded by open-source developer Jihong Min and adds temperature monitoring support for the xHCI controller on AMD’s Promontory21 chipsets.
The Promontory21 architecture, central to AMD600 and 800 series AM5 motherboards (including high-end X670E models), previously had no native chipset temperature monitoring under Linux. By feeding real-time sensor data into the Linux hardware monitoring (HWMON) subsystem, this driver works seamlessly with popular user-space monitoring tools. The patches have been submitted to the kernel mailing list for review, and users will soon be able to activate the feature through a dedicated kernel Kconfig option.
This development not only closes a monitoring gap for AMD platforms on Linux, but also signals a shift in AI-assisted programming from high-level applications into low-level kernel code. AMD executives had earlier experimented with Claude Code to generate test drivers, and prom21-xhci’s inclusion in the kernel review process further confirms that AI-generated low-level code can meet strict system specifications and security requirements. As large language models grow better at handling domain-specific knowledge, AI’s role in building core operating system modules will move from experimental to routine—speeding up development and device compatibility across the open-source community.
