Cloudflare CEO Predicts Bot Traffic to Surpass Human Activity by 2027

Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince warns that bots are poised to dominate the web. Speaking at the SXSW conference in Austin, he predicted that the explosive growth of artificial intelligence will lead to AI bot traffic surpassing human online activity by 2027.

Prince detailed how the rise of generative AI is fueling this surge in bot activity. To answer user queries, AI agents and bots must visit a vastly greater number of websites than a human ever would.

“If a human were shopping for a digital camera, they might visit five websites,” Prince explained. “An AI agent performing the same task could easily visit 1,000 times that number—5,000 sites. This represents real traffic and a real load that every online service must now handle.”

Before the generative AI boom, bot traffic accounted for roughly 20% of internet activity, with Google's web crawler being the largest single source. Beyond a few other reputable crawlers, most remaining bots were operated by scammers and malicious actors. Prince's company, which provides infrastructure and security for one-fifth of all websites, has a unique vantage point on these trends.

“Generative AI has an insatiable appetite for data,” Prince stated. “We now suspect that by 2027, bot traffic online will exceed human traffic.”

This fundamental shift will necessitate new technologies, Prince noted. He envisions the development of secure “sandboxes” for AI agents—temporary, isolated environments that can be instantly created to perform a task and then dismantled upon completion. This would be crucial for tasks like using an AI agent to plan a vacation.

“We’re focused on building the underlying infrastructure,” Prince said. “The goal is to make spinning up new, secure code for these agents as effortless as opening a new browser tab.”

He anticipates a near future where millions of these agent sandboxes could be created every second.

Such massive scaling of bot activity will inevitably strain physical infrastructure—data centers and servers. Prince drew a parallel to the COVID-19 pandemic, when a sudden spike in video streaming traffic from platforms like YouTube, Disney+, and Netflix nearly overwhelmed parts of the internet.

“This current growth is more gradual,” Prince added. “But unlike the pandemic spike, which plateaued after two weeks, internet traffic is now on a relentless upward trajectory with no sign of slowing down.”

These concerns about network overload effectively highlight the value of Cloudflare's services. The company helps websites maintain high availability, fast loading times, and robust security against attacks. Its offerings include a global content delivery network, comprehensive security and DDoS protections, and an “Always Online” service that displays cached website content during server outages. It also provides businesses with tools to manage and block unwanted AI bot traffic.

Cloudflare's extensive scale provides a unique perspective on the internet's evolution and the emerging challenges of the generative AI era.

“What people often miss is that AI represents a fundamental platform shift,” Prince concluded, comparing it to earlier transitions like the move from desktop to mobile computing. “AI is another such shift… it will completely transform how we consume information.”
