British AI Firm Wayve Launches $85M Employee Stock Buyout, Valuation Soars to $8.5B
Wayve, a UK-based autonomous driving technology startup, recently launched a $85 million stock tender offer for its employees. The program allows employees to sell a portion of their vested internal equity, offering a valuable opportunity to cash out before the company goes public.
The liquidity program is backed by both new and existing investors, with pricing based on the company's latest valuation of $8.5 billion. That valuation was set when Wayve completed its $1.2 billion Series D round in February, which attracted major investments from NVIDIA, Microsoft, and SoftBank.
Leveraging Liquidity to Attract Top Talent
Over the past year, Wayve doubled its global workforce to 1,200 employees as it accelerates development of a general-purpose autonomous driving AI driver. Amid fierce competition, the company uses regular employee stock repurchases as a key incentive and retention tool.
This early cash-out strategy is becoming a new trend in AI startups. By providing clear expectations for wealth realization, Wayve has strengthened team cohesion and effectively prevented core technical talent from moving to competitors or starting their own ventures.
