In a San Leandro, California warehouse, Encord, a data tools firm, is running an innovative experiment: "pilots" wear headsets with cameras and EEG sensors while playing Jenga to capture brain activity. The Zander Labs EEG headset tracks brainwaves in real-time during precise tasks, inferring mental states like errors or surprise to build richer training datasets for robot models.
Encord argues the main hurdle for humanoid and warehouse robots is not model architecture but a severe shortage of real-world physical training data. Vineeth Velmurugan, Encord's head of robot learning, notes, "This data simply doesn't exist," estimating the required volume at five times YouTube's entire library.
The Economic Dilemma of Physical AI: From Manual Operations to Data Factories
Inside the warehouse, pilots use "master-slave" robotic arm devices—one controlled by humans, the other mimicking movements—to generate training data for tasks like pouring coffee and stacking poker chips. Shelves hold fake flowers, books, plastic vegetables, and cat litter boxes as props for training household robotic hands. At another station, pilot Sofia Infante controls a robotic arm to plug and unplug server network cables, an automation task highly sought by data center operators but currently limited by robotic gripper flexibility.
Beyond EEG signals, Encord is developing new data modalities: attaching sensor arrays to forearms to detect muscle electrical signals, creating 3D hand trajectories to fill gaps when fingers are obscured in videos. Each dataset includes dense physical action annotations (e.g., "right hand tightening a bolt"). Velmurugan estimates this high-quality annotation is 100 times more valuable for specific task training than ordinary data, with production costs only 20 times higher—making it theoretically profitable.
