Claude Unveils First Full Ultraviolet Sky Map, Charting 119 Million Stars

With the powerful assistance of Claude, Anthropic’s large language model, astrophysicists have successfully generated the first complete ultraviolet all-sky map in history. This vast star chart, featuring 119 million stars, was largely completed by Claude using previous multi-wavelength astronomical data, covering approximately one-third of the sky. This breakthrough fills historical gaps that persisted for 50 years, largely caused by ultraviolet survey telescopes deliberately avoiding the bright regions of the Milky Way.
Creating an all-sky map is a demanding and complex systematic project in astronomical research. The involvement of AI has significantly boosted efficiency, transforming tedious manual processing that once took astrophysicists several weeks into a streamlined workflow. Claude efficiently managed the entire process—including data collection, calibration, cross-calibration, and completion calculations—by flexibly scheduling multiple agents, reducing the timeline from weeks to just a few days.
Remarkably, the areas completed by AI showed an error rate of only around 10% when compared to actual measured values. To ensure scientific rigor, the model precisely marked the measured or calculated attributes of each pixel in the final image, along with their corresponding error ranges.
This breakthrough demonstrates that fundamental scientific problems, long hindered by limited human resources, are gradually being addressed by AI agents. In future frontier explorations, human researchers can step away from tedious, low-level data processing to focus on directing research and identifying core scientific questions.
