Bing Takes Center Stage, Google Assembles Elite Gemini Team as AI Programming Competition Enters Close Combat

To close the gap with Anthropic's Claude model in AI programming, Google DeepMind has restructured its resources and formed a dedicated team named Gemini, led by Sebastian Borgeaud. The group’s clear mission is to solve complex, long-term coding challenges and significantly strengthen AI’s practical role in software development.
Google co-founder Sergey Brin has taken a strong personal interest in this effort. He is overseeing the project directly and worked with DeepMind’s CTO on the planning. Inside the company, Brin has stressed that Google must catch up to Anthropic in AI agent execution. He sees strong programming ability not only as a key measure of AI intelligence but also as a critical foundation for enabling AI to improve itself.
Currently, Google tracks agent usage through a tool called "Jetski" and uses that data to quantitatively rank team performance. To push AI deeper into development workflows, the company has also arranged specialized training for a large number of engineers, requiring them to use internal agent tools to boost their daily productivity.
Google’s AI push extends well beyond coding. Recent moves show its reach spreading across multiple fronts: building native apps for Apple Macs, embedding Gemini deeply into Docs and Sheets office suites, and supplying an unclassified AI assistant to the U.S. Department of Defense. The company is also stepping up investment in physical AI, refining the quality of AI Overviews answers, and planning to bring large models into the smart TV space.
This flurry of activity sends a clear signal: Google is accelerating from the technical foundation to the application layer, trying to regain the lead in the race for AI agent efficiency.
