Anthropic Paid Users Double as Claude Pro Subscriptions Surge Amid Security Concerns and New Features
Super Bowl marketing, geopolitical controversies, and the release of advanced developer tools have driven Anthropic's large model Claude to a record high in paid consumer users. According to third-party firm Indagari, which analyzed credit card transaction data from roughly 28 million U.S. consumers, Claude's paid user base surged in early 2026, and the company confirms that its paid subscriptions have doubled this year.

This growth trajectory aligns closely with a series of key events. In late January, Anthropic's public dispute with the U.S. Department of Defense over AI military applications emerged. CEO Dario Amodei refused to allow the model for lethal autonomous actions or mass surveillance, issuing a strong statement on February 26. Despite the threat of being labeled a "supply risk" and subsequent legal action, this safety stance actually sparked a surge in civilian subscriptions. Meanwhile, Anthropic's Super Bowl ads, which mocked competitors' commercial strategies, generated significant brand buzz, leading to a strong return of existing users in February.
Beyond branding, product evolution is the core driver. The developer tool Claude Code and collaboration tool Claude Cowork, both launched in January, have been the main catalysts for subscription conversions. This week, the release of the "Computer Use" feature—enabling autonomous clicking and scrolling—along with the mobile task allocation tool Dispatch, triggered another sharp rise in subscriptions.

Data shows that new subscriptions are primarily concentrated in the $20-per-month Pro tier. While its overall volume still trails OpenAI, Anthropic is building strong brand loyalty in the premium consumer market through its differentiated safety stance and a series of tool-focused product launches. Its paid user growth rate suggests it has the potential to challenge the existing market landscape.
