Anker has recalled its PowerCore 10000 power bank (model A1263) because of a "potential lithium-ion battery issue" that presents a fire hazard. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (USCPSC), the company has received 19 reports of fires and explosions, leading to minor burn injuries and property damage exceeding $60,700.
Approximately 1,158,000 units are affected. These were sold online via Amazon, Newegg, and eBay from June 2016 to December 2022. You can identify the recalled batteries by the Anker logo engraved on the side and the model number A1263 printed along the bottom edge. Note that only units sold in the US with qualifying serial numbers are included in the recall. Visit Anker's website to check if your device qualifies.

To request the gift card or replacement unit, you must submit a photo of the power bank with the current date and the word “recall” written in permanent marker, along with a clear picture of the model and serial number printed on the device’s bottom. Although a purchase receipt is requested, it is not required to take part in the recall program.
Once confirmed as part of the recall, the power bank should be taken to a facility that safely handles lithium-ion battery disposal due to fire risks. Locate these facilities through the Environmental Protection Agency’s website or other US-based e-waste processing organizations. Do not discard the battery in regular trash, recycling bins, or retail battery drop-off boxes.
This recall highlights that power banks and backup batteries can develop serious problems over time—especially older units like these, which are now nearly a decade old. If you regularly use devices powered by lithium-ion batteries, watch for signs of overheating or swelling and dispose of them responsibly if you suspect any issue. While still more expensive, you might also consider switching to solid-state batteries, which are more powerful, safer, and longer lasting than current lithium-ion options.
