Amazon is rolling out a new capability that lets users customize the personality of its AI assistant, Alexa+. On Wednesday, the company debuted three distinct personality styles — Brief, Chill, and Sweet — designed to modify the tone of the AI assistant.
With the Brief style, Alexa replies with concise and to-the-point answers, whereas Chill mode gives Alexa a more relaxed, conversational tone, much like a casual friend. When the Sweet style is activated, Alexa adopts a warmer, more upbeat demeanor, offering supportive and positive feedback, according to Amazon.

For some users, highly affirming AI models, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, have led to unhealthy reliance on the technology. In certain situations, these interactions reportedly worsened existing mental health struggles, contributing to crises or even suicides, as claimed in several lawsuits.
Nevertheless, many chatbot users prefer having control over their AI’s communication style, sometimes even writing custom instructions to shape its personality. Responding to this demand, OpenAI introduced new ChatGPT settings last December, enabling users to fine-tune the AI’s warmth, enthusiasm, and emoji usage. Despite these options, some users feel the latest model remains overly reassuring by default.
Amazon explains that its new Alexa styles are built around five personality traits: expressiveness, emotional openness, formality, directness, and humor. Each style represents a specific combination of these traits. For example, Brief mode is not only succinct but also informal, straightforward, and uses little humor.
To switch Alexa’s personality style, users can either speak to the assistant through an Echo device or adjust the setting in the Alexa app under Device Settings > Personality Style.
The company notes that these three styles are just the beginning, with more options planned for the future. Currently, the feature is only available in the U.S.
