Meta has unveiled a new WhatsApp feature designed to enable confidential interactions with Meta AI, named "Private Processing." According to the official announcement, this completely optional tool will roll out in the coming weeks. It ensures that neither Meta, WhatsApp, nor third-party partners can view user interactions carried out through it.
Meta explains that with Private Processing, users can instruct the AI to handle their requests—such as generating chat summaries—while keeping their data secure. The system deletes user messages once each session concludes, making it impossible for potential attackers to retrieve this information afterward.
Meta's goal is to protect users from being directly targeted by attackers without a full system breach. The company also aims to let independent third parties audit Private Processing to verify its privacy and security safeguards. This system is now included in Meta's bug bounty program, and the company plans to publish a detailed security engineering design document closer to launch.
The described approach resembles Apple’s Private Cloud Compute (PCC). Like Apple, Meta will route Private Processing requests through a third-party provider using OHTTP, a protocol that masks user IP addresses. However, as Wired highlights, a key difference is that all of WhatsApp's AI tasks run on Meta's servers, and users must manually activate Private Processing. In contrast, Apple defaults to on-device AI processing and only uses PCC when requests are sent to its servers.
