Throughout the past decade, we've established many foundational elements for the era of modern AI. This includes pioneering the Transformer architecture, which today underpins all major language models, as well as developing sophisticated agent systems capable of learning and strategizing, exemplified by AlphaGo and AlphaZero.
We've utilized these advanced techniques to drive significant progress in quantum computing, mathematics, life sciences, and algorithmic discovery. Our commitment continues to deepen in both the scope and intensity of our fundamental research, as we strive to invent the next wave of breakthroughs essential for achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI).
This ambition drives our efforts to evolve our premier multimodal model, Gemini 2.5 Pro, into a "world model." This advanced system will be able to create plans and envision new scenarios by comprehending and simulating real-world dynamics, mirroring the brain's own processes.
Our journey in this direction has been ongoing. It spans from early breakthroughs in training agents to excel at intricate games like Go and StarCraft, to the creation of Genie 2—a system that generates interactive 3D environments from a single image prompt.
We are already witnessing the emergence of these capabilities. For instance, Gemini leverages world knowledge and reasoning to represent and simulate natural settings, Veo demonstrates an intuitive grasp of physics, and Gemini Robotics enables machines to learn grasping, obey commands, and adapt in real-time.
Transforming Gemini into a world model is a pivotal move toward a new class of AI—one that is more versatile and practical. We envision a universal AI assistant: an intelligent entity that understands your context and can plan and execute actions for you, seamlessly across all your devices.
Integrating Project Astra's real-time features into our products
Our ultimate goal is to reinvent the Gemini app into a universal AI assistant that handles daily chores, manages routine administration, and surfaces engaging recommendations—ultimately increasing our productivity and enhancing our daily lives.
The first step involves incorporating the functionalities we initially demonstrated with Project Astra, our research prototype from the previous year, including video comprehension, screen sharing, and memory.
Over the last year, we have integrated similar features into Gemini Live for a wider audience to use today. Our pursuit of innovation continues at the forefront of technology. Enhancements include more natural voice output via native audio, refined memory functions, and the addition of computer control capabilities.
We are currently collecting feedback on these features from a select group of testers and are preparing to introduce them to Gemini Live, new Search experiences, the Live API for developers, and novel hardware like smart glasses.
At every stage of development, safety and responsibility remain our top priorities. We recently completed an extensive research initiative examining the ethical considerations of advanced AI assistants, and these insights continuously guide our research, development, and deployment strategies.
Developing AI that handles multiple tasks for you
With Project Mariner, we are also investigating how agent-based systems can assist with multitasking. This research prototype explores the future of human-agent collaboration, beginning with web browsers.
Since Project Mariner's initial launch last December, we have collaborated closely with a trusted group of testers to refine its experimental functionalities.
The updated Project Mariner now features a coordinated team of agents capable of performing up to ten distinct tasks simultaneously. These agents can assist with information retrieval, booking appointments, online shopping, conducting research, and more—all concurrently.
The enhanced Project Mariner is now accessible to Google AI Ultra subscribers in the United States. We are incorporating its computer interaction features into the Gemini API and plan to introduce more of its capabilities across Google's product ecosystem throughout the year.
