UK to Offer Data Residency for Machine Learning Processing

There's been a huge spike in interest for Google Cloud's generative AI around the world, and the UK is no exception. But we get it—certain industries, clients, and use cases need their data to stay put in their own region to really make the most of these tools.
So, we're excited to share some big news at the Google Cloud Next London Summit: starting next month, you'll be able to do machine learning processing for Gemini 1.5 Flash right here in the UK.
New data residency offerings
Last year, we let UK organizations know they could keep their data at-rest in the UK when using Google Cloud's generative AI stuff. That includes Generative AI on Vertex AI - Codey and Imagen models, plus Text Embeddings and Multimodal Embeddings APIs.
Now, we're thrilled to say that all kinds of UK organizations, even those in the public sector, can not only store their data at-rest but also do machine learning processing for our top-notch large language model, Gemini 1.5 Flash, all within the UK.
Our pledges on data residency:
- Your data stays put: We promise your data will only hang out in the spots you pick, just like it says on our Cloud Locations Page and Service Specific Terms.
- Machine learning processing happens locally: All the machine learning processing of your data, from Gemini inference to deploying other ML models for output, will happen in the same region or multi-region where your data lives.

So the UK wants data to stay put? Interesting how 'data residency' is becoming the new selling point for cloud giants. But isn't that just admitting they can't guarantee security otherwise? 🙄
