Stripe Acquires OpenRouter for $7.5 Billion
Stripe, a leading global payment processor, has officially announced the completion of its acquisition of OpenRouter, a prominent AI model routing and gateway platform. According to insider sources, the deal was valued at approximately $7.5 billion, representing a significant increase from OpenRouter’s $1.3 billion valuation during its $113 million Series B funding round in May—a surge of more than five times.
As a critical infrastructure layer in the current AI landscape, OpenRouter offers developers a unified interface that dynamically routes requests to hundreds of AI models based on user requirements, task complexity, cost, and reliability. The platform now supports over 400 to 500 mainstream models, serves more than 10 million users worldwide, and processes over 10 trillion tokens daily. Its extensive traffic and scheduling data hold significant value within the industry.

Following the merger, OpenRouter will continue to operate independently under its existing name and mission. The company will maintain its core product roadmap, ensuring that routing decisions always prioritize user interests. The transaction is expected to close formally within the next few weeks.
Industry analysts suggest that Stripe’s strategic goal is to integrate advanced model selection and routing mechanisms into its payment metering stack. With the rapid growth of the agent economy, businesses will need to manage not only traditional revenue streams but also precisely control massive token consumption. By combining its payment infrastructure with AI reasoning routing, Stripe has secured a central position in the AI consumption and intelligent economy sectors.
