Step Astronomy Unveils Step Edge Series Terminal Models for Local Multimodal Processing
StepZen has launched the Step Edge Series Terminal Models for smartphones, automotive systems, and other edge devices. The series includes four versions: Basic, Audio, GUI, and Gen. These models handle text, images, and audio locally, enabling screen understanding, speech recognition, interface operations, and image generation.
The Step Edge series terminal tools achieve a call latency as low as 0.1 seconds. For simple, repetitive, or low-network conditions, tasks are executed entirely on-device, while complex reasoning is offloaded to the cloud. This hybrid approach minimizes dependency on network and cloud resources, and because sensitive data never leaves the device, privacy and security are significantly improved.

To further enhance edge performance, LeapStep has unveiled its in-house Step Inference NPU inference engine, designed to substantially cut inference latency on terminal chips.
According to the company, the Step Edge series models achieve top rankings in 29 core evaluation metrics, showcasing leading multi-modal capabilities on edge devices.
This development accelerates the trend of AI on-device processing, and is expected to deliver more real-time and private user experiences to smart devices like smartphones and vehicles.
