Spotify Expands AI-Powered Playlists to UK and Additional Markets

After initial testing in New Zealand and a recent launch in the United States and Canada, Spotify announced on Monday it is expanding its AI-powered "Prompted Playlists" feature to Premium subscribers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden.

With Prompted Playlists, users can generate customized playlists by simply describing what they want to hear in their own words. Rather than searching for specific songs or artists, they can describe a desired mood, scenario, or inspiration, and Spotify's AI will build the playlist for them.

To use the feature, users tap "Create," select "Prompted Playlist," and enter any prompt in English. It is designed to interpret a wide range of themes, from moods and aesthetics to personal memories. Prompts can be broad or highly specific, referencing genres, musical eras, activities, lyrics, instruments, or even asking for a playlist inspired by a TV show, movie, or life event. Users can also specify in their prompt if they want the playlist to focus on new discoveries or draw primarily from their existing library.

After submitting a prompt, Spotify's AI generates a personalized playlist. The system considers the user's listening history while incorporating current musical and cultural trends. Each song on the playlist includes a brief explanation for why it was included.

Users can edit their playlists by tweaking the original prompt or starting fresh. For evolving musical tastes, playlists can be scheduled to automatically refresh on a daily or weekly basis.

As this feature is still in beta, Spotify noted it may evolve based on user feedback and that usage limits are currently in place. Some users have reported reaching these limits after approximately 20 to 30 prompts.

Spotify has been broadly integrating AI across its platform, including features like Page Match, which scans a physical book page to locate the corresponding section in an audiobook, and About This Song. The platform has also updated its lyrics feature to offer global translations and offline access. Last week, SeatGeek partnered with Spotify to help listeners easily find ticket links for concerts and tour dates directly from an artist's profile within the app.

Internally, the company has infused AI throughout its workflows. Co-CEO Gustav Söderström said earlier this month that some of Spotify's top developers haven't written a line of code since December due to AI assistance.

Spotify is also growing its audiobook business by moving into physical book sales. Soon, users in the U.S. and U.K. will be able to purchase physical copies directly through the app.
