Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, recently issued a stern warning about the misuse of artificial intelligence tools as he released a new version of the open-source kernel. He noted that a flood of repetitive error reports generated by AI is severely overwhelming the kernel's security reporting channel, imposing a heavy and unnecessary workload on core maintainers.
Linus does not completely forbid the use of AI in development. His main concern is the low barrier to submitting reports. When developers rely solely on AI tools to scan for bugs in the system, other colleagues may use the same tool to identify the same issue, resulting in a constant influx of duplicate reports on the security list.

Faced with the flood of AI-generated reports, kernel maintainers must spend significant time forwarding issues repeatedly. They often have to respond with replies like 'This issue was already fixed several weeks ago' along with a link, making daily maintenance nearly unmanageable.
This week's routine kernel update proceeded normally, with driver updates accounting for roughly half of the total, and graphics processor updates being the most prominent. However, the added disruption from AI reports has significantly disrupted the previously efficient code review rhythm.
Reject shallow verbal contributions and encourage submitting patches
In response to this chaos, Torvalds provided clear and constructive suggestions to developers in the open-source community, emphasizing that kernel development does not need casual contributors who lack a deep understanding of the underlying code. He believes that merely tossing out problems using tools offers no real value to the community.
He urged developers who genuinely want to add value to the open-source community to first read the relevant documentation carefully. More importantly, while using AI tools responsibly, they must attach specific solutions and code patches when submitting reports.
