Samsung Electronics confirmed that wage negotiations with its South Korean union collapsed on May 13. The union reported that stark differences remain on key demands, including compensation system reforms and a bonus cap, and expects over 50,000 employees to join an 18-day comprehensive strike.
Multiple rounds of talks took place under South Korean government mediation, but management has not offered a satisfactory response to the union's request to remove the bonus cap. Union leaders said they have no plans to resume negotiations unless the company presents a more genuine remedial proposal.
High stakes drive bold action.
One reason behind the strong stance from Samsung employees is the widening compensation gap between Samsung and its rival SK Hynix. SK Hynix, which gained an early edge in high-bandwidth memory (HBM), removed its bonus cap last year, leading to substantially higher bonuses for its employees compared to similar roles at Samsung.
This disparity has fueled deep frustration among Samsung employees, sharply increasing union membership. Workers widely feel that the company's lag in AI chips should not be offset by cutting benefits for frontline staff.
Global Chip Supply Chain Under Strain
Industry analysts worry that a strike lasting nearly three weeks could directly disrupt Samsung's AI chip and other advanced semiconductor production. Given the highly integrated nature of the manufacturing process, any breakdown at one stage may cause shipment delays to global clients.
If production capacity suffers, global memory chip prices could spike again, while competitors may seize the chance to gain market share. At a time when demand for AI computing power is surging, this labor dispute casts a serious cloud over the global semiconductor supply chain.
